Pets in Serbia: who prefers parrots and who prefers cats?

Numerous research studies have found that people who own a pet are generally in better health, visit doctors less often, exercise more and are less depressed. Pets can also have a significant impact in reducing allergies and asthma, as well as providing support during social interaction with other people. (source: National center for health research )

Although it is difficult to fully examine the impact of pets on human health, we cannot deny their positive influence on mood.

In our large survey, we found out that 59.9% of Serbian citizens have one or more pets. Dogs (76.8%) and cats (40.8%) are at the top of the list of pets in households throughout Serbia. They are more represented in rural than in urban areas.

While an almost equal number of men (76.1%) and women (77.3%) have dogs as pets, the statistics are slightly different for cats. 42.4% of women have cats, and men slightly less (38.9%).

Fish in the aquarium are more common in the west (8.9%) and south of Serbia (7.9%), while rodents (11.6%) and parrots (6.6%) are most common in the north.
