Public opinion – general overview

Public opinion polling is a common occurrence in many countries (it is an everyday occurrence in many countries). The survey is not only conducted to support political parties and their candidates, but also serves to examine the opinion of the majority (the public) on various current political and social topics (issues). The results of these tests are usually published in various print and electronic media.

Properly conducted public opinion surveys provide an opportunity for citizens (consumers) to express themselves and for others to hear their voice (opinion). With this kind of research, the public, politicians and other interest groups have access to research results that accurately indicate the attitudes, wishes and intentions of the majority.

One of the most successful political discoveries of the last century is certainly public opinion polling (scientific polling). Public opinion polls influence the decisions made by politicians, because then they have a clear picture of what the public wants. It also indicates to the public itself (the majority) what their hopes, desires and political goals are. The test results are a mirror image; they give everyone a chance to understand where they (individuals) are and fit into the political system. When the results of opinion polls are covered by the media, then their readers and listeners are made aware that their opinion is important and can be more important than the opinion of the elite.

In the last 70 years, due to the democratic need for participation and the journalistic desire for answers (asking questions), extensive media investigations have been created.

An alternative to scientific research is non-scientific research. They are used to promote the views of an organization or to try to influence public opinion by presenting blanket information. Research has shown that this approach does not have the effect that those who try it would like.
