The introduced state of emergency or emergency measures in the majority of Western countries, but also in countries around the world, caused different behavior than usual and fueled fears.
Are our citizens afraid of being infected, how much do they avoid public places and crowds, do they wear a mask, do they take more care about hygiene than before, how much do they avoid contact with things like handrails or doorknobs.
We conducted an online survey in Serbia on a sample of 776 respondents and compared them with the results of the YouGov company that used the same research technique in the same period (third week of March 2020) at the global level (China, USA, UK, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Spain, India…)
In Serbia, there is a fear among 41% of citizens that they can get infected, but it is below the average for observed countries in the world, which is 55.6%. However, there is less fear in European countries than in Asian countries, and in relation to them, Serbia is on average. About 9% of Serbs have no fear of being infected.
In Serbia, the measure of avoiding public places and crowds is observed above average. The average for the observed countries is 68.9%, and Serbs avoid in 83% of cases.
About a third of Serbs (31%) wear a mask when leaving the house. In relation to the observed countries, we are slightly below the average (37.5%), but we respect this measure more than the Norwegians, the British, the Spanish…
More than a third of Serbs (75%) take care of hygiene more than before, which is on average for the world. Serbs pay more attention to hygiene in terms of touching objects in public places (64%). What’s more, this advice was followed by a large number of Serbs, and on this list, Serbia is ahead of large European countries and above the world average (50.6%).
